“I was basically a "country" boy with an older brother, two older sisters and two younger sisters. I grew up milking cows, chopping firewood, feeding chickens, slopping hogs, and other associated chores. My brother was ten years older than me, and went to the Navy in 1937. He was lost off Guadalcanal in August of 1942, so I never really knew him. My youngest sister is ten years younger than me, so it can be seen that I was raised as the only boy with four sisters. We were very close.”
